ARCH101 - General information
In this design studio, Senior Architecture students from UC Berkeley are planning a neighborhood of low-income housing for the Pinoleville-Pomo Nation (PPN) near Ukiah. The designers work in close collaboration with community members who will be able to build the plans later. As part of the process students participate in fieldtrips to interact directly with the community and the site. The PPN is seeking to implement sustainable design and technology best practices that will increase their self-sufficiency and meet their housing, energy, and water conservation needs. In this studio we will adapt national HUD guidelines to local cultural circumstances and needs. Over the semester students will learn a substantial amount about: - Native-American culture - HUD housing - energy analysis - architecture as a community service - interacting with real clients - and will produce sketches, drawings, models, and visualizations to present their designs.
