Tobias Schultz: Team Lead for CARES4Pomo

Born in Santa Cruz, California, Tobias spent his childhood living in such diverse places as Amherst, Massachusetts, and Gamboa, in the Republic of Panama. He spent time in the beach town of Ocean Beach, San Diego, before returning to Santa Cruz for his university education.

He graduated with Highest Honors from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2006, with a Bachelor's of Science in Physics. During his time there, he worked with Dr. Zack Schlesinger to develop a model to describe the crystalline lattice behavior of materials exhibiting negative thermal expansion.

After graduation, Tobias spent two years traveling the world (and surfing its best breaks), before returning to school to pursue his Master's degree at the University of California, at Berkeley. He was attracted to Mechanical Engineering for its practical applications of the principles he learned in physics, and to UC Berkeley for its interdisciplinary sustainability program.

He will graduate with a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in May 2010, with a Engineering and Business for Sustainability certificate (more info on the EBS certificate here). He is currently a member of the Berkeley Energy and Sustainable Technologies Laboratory (BEST) headed by Dr. Alice Agogino; his research interests include sustainability and life-cycle assessment. Upon graduation, Mr. Schultz will work full-time in the establishment of the Community Assessment of Renewable Energy and Sustainability (CARES), and the associated partnership with the PPN NativeCARES. He also plans to work as a consultant in life-cycle assessment.
